Advancing Suicide Prevention for Black Communities
This one-day continuing education program centers Black suicide risk and resilience, highlighting the intersecting roles of culture, identity, family, and clinical practice. Participants will examine rising suicidality among Black youth, culturally responsive approaches to risk and resilience (including for Black LGBTQ+ youth), and the roles of parenting and family as risk and protective factors. The day also covers lethal means safety counseling in the context of rising firearm suicide and practical strategies for effective documentation in suicide risk evaluation, offering 5.5 CEs for licensed psychologists (APA) and licensed social workers (ASWB).
KEYNOTE (Christopher Brown, MS, LPC, DAAETS, CSTIP):
A Restorative View of Risk & Resilience: Black Suicidality
What was once considered a protective factor against suicidality has now become an indicator for increased risk. The alarming rise in suicidality within Black communities, particularly among Black youth, is an urgent public health concern. This presentation reviews factors contributing to this disparity and explores culturally relevant and responsive interventions that tap into the natural resiliency of this population.
